The most consequential institution I've helped build has no corporate headquarters.
It began with a promise.
Nearly 30 years ago, Stephanie and I stood in a church and made vows that we understood to be far more than a beautiful ceremony.
We were committing ourselves to a lifelong adventure of sacrificial love.
And we knew we weren't sufficient to the task on our own.
We needed God not merely as the Designer of marriage, but as its continuing Steward.
That conviction shaped the home we sought to build.
Not perfectly. Not without mistakes, exhaustion, apologies, forgiveness, and the daily discovery of how much we still needed to grow.
But deliberately.
We welcomed six children in seven years. We built rhythms of prayer, conversation, shared work, homeschooling, and even getting everyone up for early morning runs.
It wasn't about producing impressive children.
It was about cultivating a place where each person could discover who they were, whose they were, and what gifts they had been entrusted to give.
Today, watching our children establish families, create music, build businesses, pursue education, and discover their own callings, I keep returning to one conviction:
The greatest measure of what we build may be what others become because of it.
Not what we control.
Not how prominently our name appears.
But the lives awakened, the gifts multiplied, and the possibilities opened for others.
And that has profoundly shaped how I understand my work.
Whether helping a university civic center find its audience, laying the foundations for a classical academy, or strengthening an organization devoted to human flourishing, the deepest question remains remarkably similar.
What are we helping people become?
For seven days, I've shared stories that helped form the convictions behind StoryForge.
But the story I'm most interested in isn't one I've already told.
It's the one still waiting to be written.
Perhaps an institution not yet imagined.
A community waiting to discover its shared purpose.
A mission whose greatest possibilities remain hidden, even from those closest to it.
Perhaps it's yours.
At StoryForge, we help leaders discover what's uniquely true and compelling about their mission, give it form, and build the pathways through which others can find their place within it.
Because the greatest stories aren't merely told.
They're lived. Shared. Multiplied.
And carried further than any one of us could take them alone.
Your organization is meant to go further.
